Silver Award

Silver: a bigger challenge

Silver builds on everything you learned at Bronze, with more independence and a longer expedition. You can start in the school year you turn 15 — and you don't need to have done Bronze first.

What you'll do

The four Silver sections

Volunteering lasts 6 months. Of Physical and Skills, you choose one to do for 6 months and the other for 3. If you're starting at Silver without a Bronze Award, you add another 6 months to Volunteering or to your longer Physical or Skills section, so the programme takes at least 12 months.

Volunteering — 6 months

Give your time to help people, your community or the environment.

Physical — 3 or 6 months

Get active with a sport, dance or fitness activity of your choice and track your improvement.

Skills — 3 or 6 months

Develop a talent or hobby you already love, or try something completely new.

Expedition — 3 days, 2 nights

Plan, train for and complete an adventurous journey as a small team.

Expedition

Your Silver expedition

3 days and 2 nights

The assessed expedition lasts a minimum of 3 days, with 2 nights camping.

7 hours of planned activity a day

At least 7 hours each day, with at least half of that spent journeying.

Training and practice first

Havant ODC leaders build on your Bronze skills (or train you from scratch if you are starting at Silver) and run a practice expedition before the assessment.
